Dear Parents,
This is our first full week back to school, and I wanted to let you know what skills we will be working on for the next few weeks. In writing and composition, we will be creating summaries from references. This skill will help your students write informative essays when given multiple references to pick from. Instead of picking key words from each sentence in a text, your students will begin to write three details or facts from the passage. Then, they will write a topic sentence and a conclusion (clincher sentence) to frame their paragraphs.
In history, we will continue learning about famous European explorers. We have learned about Marco Polo and Vasco da Gama. This week we will look at the accomplishments of Pedro Alvares Cabral and Christopher Columbus.
Finally, on Wednesday we will have a language arts quiz. A sample quiz was sent home over the weekend. The quiz will require a close reading of a passage and the identification of main ideas and details. Also, there will be a few questions that will ask students to fix sentences to be grammatically correct.
Best,
Mr. Arbogast
