In language arts this year, your students will be reviewing previously taught skills. The one I want to draw your attention to in this post is note taking and outlining. Note taking from literary resources is an important skill which grows both writing and reading skills. These past weeks we have asked your students to select the key words in each sentence of a text. These are called key words because they help to unlock the meaning of the text. If you look in your students binder under LA, you will find their outlines from taking notes.
Their names are written on the left hand side to get them accustomed to MLA formatting. Under the title, students have been taught to put the Roman numeral I. We are not using numerals for topics, but we use them to show the number of paragraphs. Under the numeral you will find a list of numbers. Each number stands for a sentence.
Our goal is to become excellent key word identifiers. Your students use these words to remember their readings and verbally retell the information.
